I’m back from Lisbon!

Hello there, I’m finally home! I’m kinda tired from the train trip but hopefully my bed will give me my deserved rest tonight…

The Rolling Stones - A Bigger Band Concert at Alvalade (Lisbon)

The Rolling Stones concert was truly amazing, definitively worth the 70€ I spent on the ticket. Mick Jagger and the rest of the band are old in age, but very young in energy and spirit. Ana Moura joined Mick Jagger in “No Expectations”. I’ve taken some pictures and recorded a few videos to share (the quality of the pictures is not that great - I was expecting better ones). You can get the whole thing here (it’s about 71MB so watch out!) - also search on YouTube for “stones alvalade” for some more videos.

I also made some really good book acquisitions in the book fair of Lisbon and Porto, here are the books that I bought:

O Fim do Mundo Está Próximo? by Jorge BuescuDesenhar Bases de Dados com UML by Pedro Nogueira RamosO Computador Universal by Martin DavisÉ Fácil by Allan and Barbara Pease

Milionário Acidental by Lee ButcherDe Bárbaros a Burocratas by Lawrence M. MillerStuart e o Modernismo em Portugal by José PachecoPsicologia e Pedagogia by Paulo Freire

Thanks to the book by Jorge Buescu I’ve found out that the Poincaré Conjecture (one of the seven Millennium Problems of the Clay Mathematics Institute) has been proven by Grigory (aka Grisha) Perelman, however the one million dollar prize is still open, if you want to satisfy your curiosity on this subject read the Wikipedia entry about the Poincaré Conjecture:

On August 22, 2006, the ICM awarded Perelman the Fields Medal for his work on the conjecture, but Perelman refused the medal. John Morgan spoke at the ICM on the Poincaré conjecture on August 24, 2006, declaring that “in 2003, Perelman solved the Poincaré Conjecture.”

The August 2006 issue of The New Yorker contains an article, titled “Manifold Destiny”, on some of the issues surrounding Perelman’s work. The proof was called the “Breakthrough of the year” by Science magazine.

I’ll be blogging a little bit about my own math research later on, right now I’m busy (as usual) with my business projects and with ZANCHYN, a Internet art project where I’m involved as a consultant.
